The Kabal of the Fursaken - The List

As the putty goes onto my infantry, and plastic shavings litter the floor of my studio, I thought I would spend some time discussing the actual 2k point army list I will be using with my Dark Eldar / Skaven project.

The army list I am currently building, is intended to be characterful, and fun for both myself and my opponent.  I know that our hobby has a habit of polarizing gamers into either "competitive" or "fluffy" categories, but I try to keep this division between my actual collections instead.  If I wanted to be truly competitive at an event, I have a large collection of mechanized IG to play with.  With my Dark Eldar / Skaven army, I honestly wanted to make something that would be unique on the table, and a challenge to build.  While I will not be explaining the conversions in this post, I assure you that every model in the army will be a very unique and characterful modeling conversion.  Here is the list itself:

1998 points

HQ
440 - Asdrubael Vect w/ Dais of Destruction
85 - Haemonculus w/ Webway Portal

ELITES
176 - Incubi x 8

TROOPS
165 - Wyches x 10 w/ Haywire Grenades and one upgrades to be a Hekatrix w/ Agoniser and Blast Pistol
165 - Wyches x 10 w/ Haywire Grenades and one upgrades to be a Hekatrix w/ Agoniser and Blast Pistol

165 - Wyches x 10 w/ Haywire Grenades and one upgrades to be a Hekatrix w/ Agoniser and Blast Pistol

FAST ATTACK
78 - Reavers x 3 w/ One Heat Lance
78 - Reavers x 3 w/ One Heat Lance
66 - Reavers x 3

HEAVY SUPPORT
125 - Ravager w/ Three Dark Lances, Flicker Field and Night Shields
125 - Ravager w/ Three Dark Lances, Flicker Field and Night Shields

Vect makes sure I have the first turn, which is whenI rush forward 12 with his dais, 8 Incubi, and the Haemonculus.  The Haemonculus jumps out on turn one, leaving a pain token with Vect and his Incubi, and opens the webway portal.  From turn two on, 50 Wyches dump out and assault.  These Wyches are armed to deal with armor or infantry, depending on what they find.  The Ravagers serve as transport destroyers, while the Reavers serve as distractions, moving cover and late-game objective interference (provided any of the units survive).

Again, this was not written to be competative, but built to work well with my idea of a full army conversion.  I also wanted to keep the unit types to a minimum, to minimize the confusion the army may cause.  As always, I will be creating an army book for each opponent with unit explanations and photos, as well as fluff and background.  I hope that these sorts of touches communicate my desire to bring my own creative ideas to the hobby, and not cheat someone out of a game with incorrectly-sized or represented models.

Regardless of the limitations as far as competitive play goes, I think this will be pretty enjoyable to field, and fight against.

Comments are welcome!

  1. The army book is a great idea. I always make a sheet saying what counts as what, but pictures seem like they might help folks.

  2. 'The Fursaken' A pun so horrid that it can only qualify as awesome!

  3. Are you going to be making any rat-themed war machines to stand in for the Talos/Chronos? There are some nice Clan Skryre Rat Ogres they produced for the Specialist Necromunda range that would look really cool.

  4. What, no Rat Ogre Grotesques? lol

I like the list, but wyches? I feel like Skaven would be more about exotic weapons and stabbing in the back... not about running at the enemy to get in close combat. Not a rat like thing to do. Why did you choose a wych cult list to represent the army?

Curious to see how it turns out. My Berzerkers have never killed rats before...

  5. Absolute love the idea, especially the skaven. I love it when people take armies and spin it on its heady modeling wise.

But this leads me to my only complaint; the list/unit composition. Your undertaking this epic and awesome task, but using 50 of the "same" models, or rather x5 of the same squad maxed out. Like grimnar alludes to I think there are some other unqiue opportunities out there that not only stay in theme but maybe even enhance it? and potentially make the list a bit better/playable, and dare I say competative.

I wont knock it at all though, as I am sure its going to look absolutely fantastic when done, and a blast to play with skaven in 40k lol.

  7. Da Masta Cheef: Glad to entertain!

Mark: I agree with you on both fronts, hellpit and necromunda rat ogres. However, I am trying to keep this army "as is", and not go crazy the way I usually do and wind up building everything in a codex.

Grimnar: A Warlock rides past mid-field on a rickety flying machine, then blows a hole in the ground with a drill-tipped dynamite satchel. Out of the hole, pours fifty warpstone-crazed rats with 4++ dodge saves in CC, and proceed to stab face. I am not sure it gets much more Skaven than that. =D

Bully: I hear you man, I had a ton of ideas going into this project. Unfortunately, creating a total conversion for a tournament event, is a bit risky. You walk a fine line between "creativity", and "modeling for advantage". I intentionally tried to use as few different unit types as possible, to minimize this confusion. Hence the limited variety.

Julio: Thanks! I am excited to see how it turns out, too.

Back to the work-bench! More greenstuff awaits!

  8. Is there any chance of a simple greenstuff item shown in the works? I'm very curious about it, but have no idea how it works.

PS. The rats sound fabulous. Truly glorious!

  9. No worries Dan, you've definatly inspired me though mate. I've got 4 projects this year - finish my BA's, get my GK's under way (when/if new models come out) demons for WHFB - and I want a epic "count as" challenge of an army, I was thinking something around guard - but tbh 2 of my lists are tank based, but you've got me thinking!

I can see the issue though. I am still looking forward to everything on it, even with 50 of the same, you can do some crazy conversions to give each a slight edge over each other.

I can see the real focal point being the Dias/Vect and the Reavers and even the raiders, these are what could really draw the eye in off the bat.
