The model consists of primary parts from 13 different model kits, drilled-out and strung onto a skeleton made from two wire coat hangers. Each limb is built from at least two vehicles, wheeled, winged, tracked or legged. The torso is a land raider, the backpack is a turret from a baneblade, housing the 9 volt battery for the led eye. The feet, lifta, claw, deffkannon, face, head and exhaust piping are all from the GW big mek stompa. The chin/jaw and grinder-butt are from the battlewagon kit.
This table was a long time in the making, and I am happy to see the project finished. I am particularly satisfied with the wind-swept leaves, and the way they unify an otherwise less-cohesive collection of scenery. The color palette is to my liking as well; the muted storybook color scheme allows the more colorful models a suitable background. The scatter terrain like barrels and crates aid to break up the otherwise rigid lines of a network of alleyways, streets and fences. The modular nature of the collection allows for a 20 minute setup and breakdown, while maintaining flexibility.

I am a bit behind in updating this blog with my Malifaux board's progress. Consider this post something of an intermediary, as I have much more work to share with you, but I needed some sort of bridge to the (almost) finished board. I digress.
Here you can see some sample terrain, before it had even received primer. Washing and sanding all of those Armorcast pieces took a long time. Nothing like the seven months it took Armorcast to complete my order, but a long time nonetheless.
Here you can see the undercoloring I added to these cobblestone roads. While these pieces eventually recieved a variety of cool grey and blue drybrush treatments, I started by burying the "minor holy trinity" of orange, green and purple. This grants both color depth, and a hidden complement to any primary colored models that traverse such bumpy paths.
What kind of model should I mount on the pillar? I want something suitably gothic and moody to paint-up as weathered stone or bronze, but I seem to be blanking on what exactly to add. A Malifaux, GW or Privateer Press model would make this scenery a bit too "brand loyal" for me. I have been considering using something more neutral, like a chess piece. Maybe a sinister looking queen would fit the setting, almost like a Red Queen meets Mrs. Lovitt.

I would love some suggestions. Till then...

The vertigo induced by our impossibly nerdy hobby, crossing into uncharted territory.

I got married yesterday. In an effort to incorporate some small fraction of my broken toy factory lifestyle into the proceedings, I decided to contribute to the banquet table centerpieces, with a variety of wind-up nightmares.

After purchasing ~50 working(ish) wind-up toys from ebay for around $30,
I went to work with clippers, putty, Testors, and a bottomless
bits-box. After turning each cheery pastel plaything into something
more suited for combat, I spraypainted the toys with a gloss black to not only unify them, but color coordinate with a few other decorative elements.
While this did "gum up" some of the gears and working parts, the end
result was a shambling army of nightmarish intent.

If you look in the lower left quadrant of the above pic, you will see a red bus. The photo at the top of this post, is the very same bus, with some extra missiles and Robogears chassis bits added. And the cheap gloss black spraypaint, of course. The instagram filter? Not my doing.

These toys served as both conversation pieces, as well as distractions for the children in attendance to play with. I encouraged people to take them at the end of the reception, and satisfyingly enough, not one was left behind. I will have more pics eventually, as even our wedding photographers were posing the clockwork critters among our other decorations, and snapping pics.

So what does this have to do with gaming? Not much. Other than...

Maybe I have seen too many wedding pics, where our hobby is represented by a space-marine cake topper. Sort of a "Here you go, honey" element of inclusion. I wanted to feature our little world of toybashing, while making it just a touch more mainstream... and I am happy with the results.

By all means, steal this idea.Dan (nyhil)http://www.blogger.com/profile/01743035304243821733noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-569833534976465990.post-22794801451617574302013-09-01T20:55:00.002-04:002013-09-01T20:55:28.018-04:00Daemon Prince Conversions x 3

If Giger, Lovecraft and Tolkein went to Vraks.

This weekend, between other projects, I whipped-up three flying Daemon Princes. The base of these conversions, was the Balrog kit GW produces. After removing the "flames", and replacing the gaps with sculpted putty, I worked out this head treatment:

This is a combination of bits from the Dryad kit for the Cthulhu tentacles, as well as the knee-guard from a Dust model for the helmet. Also included, is the increasingly-mandatory Maulerfiend tentacle. I experimented with an etched-brass logo on the front of the mask, but I think the models works better without it.

Wyrd Miniatures has set a remarkably inspiring standard with the art
direction of the new edition of Malifaux. To honor the new edition, I have been toiling away on a new table.

I started with a 3'x3' latex mat, purchased from ZUZZY Miniatures Wargaming Terrain.

The sheet comes pre-molded with a variety of surface details and features, while retaining a mostly-flat surface. The natural latex was glued down to a 3'x3' sheet of masonite, using watered-down Elmer's wood glue. I had to work trapped air out from under the latex mat during this stage, to assure a tight grip as well as prevent future tearing.

Next, I airbrushed the natural grey of the latex, with a dappling of purples and greens. I planned to color the board with predominantly warm colors, knowing that the cobblestones, graves and buildings will be built with cool tones in mind. Regardless, this smattering of purple and green was to begin with a varied foundation, representative of the organic, natural world.

I next applied a variety of thinned-down washes. Some, like the inevitable "devlan mud" treatment, were thinned out and washed over the entire surface. Other tones, such as sepia and chestnut, were applied in meandering paths, as well as outlining the sculpted roots and rocks. After, I returned to the airbrush with alternating shades of brown, going first with a light tone, then with a dark to cover specific patches, for even more variation. Working such "natural" dappling with an airbrush is exceptionally easy, but difficult to explain. Your eye notices a "vacuum" of pigment in an area, and a steady, patient hand with the airbrush can almost go on autopilot.

After drybrushing a few small, subtle patches of khaki onto the dirt, I began to pick out the sculpted details with specific colors and treatments. Streaks of ink in the grain of the wood, and a few irreverent purple and green washes to spruce-up the grey stones. I also began to add patches of dark green flock, as well as leaves.

Working with seed-pod leaves, is an exercise in patience. I first grasp the edge of a pod leaf with tweezers, which is no small feat. I next dip the underside of the leaf in a spot of Elmer's glue, and steadily apply it to the latex board. I had to be careful to position the leaves in such a way that they would not easily lift or peel off.

I took a break from leaves at this point, and began experimenting with a bit of weathering powder. By brushing-in some brown and black powder, then dragging the pigment out, I was able to add even more "natural" looking shade to the surface. This was followed by a layer or two of Testor's dullcote.

I went back to the leaves, and added a mind-numbing number of them. I still want to add more.

Now that the surface is complete, I am excited to get to work on the terrain set. I can only really tell if I have achieved enough variation, when the board is populated with painted accoutrements. I will be sure to post photos as this comes together.

One more time, if you squint, and imagine all the wrought iron and twisted trees...

A hobby filled weekend sees this project draw to a close.

After some consultation, I worked with painter's tape to produce the hazard stripe effect I had been working on. After applying the carefully measured tape to the sides of the tanks, I used a drybrush/dapple technique to create an aged and worn black, to match the rest of the weathered model's appearance.

After removing the tape, I sponged on a blend of dark brown wash and metallic, with a light touch, to give the appearance of chipping paint along the most worn areas of the stripes. After this dried, I washed the entire area with a sepia to unify both black and yellow.

This effect is used across all six tanks, with the location of each hazard striped portion, coinciding with the unit designed to be transported.

Unfortunately, the painter's tape I was working with became a bit fickle at the 28mm scale. I was forced to freehand the hazard stripes on my infantry shoulderpads. I used the same technique here, as I did with the tanks, but the striping was quite a bit slower... While by no means perfect, I am extremely happy with the results:

Sorry about the blur here, but the model on the far right is a good example of the sponged mettalic/brown wash used for a chipping effect.
I even caution striped the army transport! Luckily, after cutting lots of foam, I can successfully fit the entire 2k point army into this KR multicase. Using my old X-Board mobile army tray, I think I may have finally developed an army I could travel with.

The most hazardous aspect of the Iron Warriors.

Caution/Hazard stripes, are an iconic element of the Iron Warriors history, and I have put-off this step long enough. Due to the location of these hazard stripes, painter's tape and the airbrush are unfortunately out of the question.

So far, I have built up the yellow color from a testor's masterwork grey
primer, through 4 different GW yellows. At this point, all that really
remains is the addition of straight, diagonal black lines. This has the eye-catching appeal of a poisoned frog, but due to said eye-catching appeal, these stripes must be applied perfectly straight. Now, the word "perfect" has become a bit of a bother.

The consensus of my peers, is that caution stripes should be done with tape, or avoided altogether. The reasoning behind this, is that without tape, the stripes will never be "perfect". I would argue, that even with the tape, it will never actually be a "perfect" set of hazard stripes.

So what does this mean? Well, I plan on setting out some guides with a sharpened pencil, then filling in the thickness of said lines gradually. This should give me a halfway-decent skeleton to build from. For reference, I was glancing through the 2nd edition rulebook and chaos codex, and I don't think it would be possible to make more hideous "parallel lines".

I painted hazard stripes manually on the base of my Alien Queen Swarmlord model, and while not %100 perfect, they certainly communicate the aesthetic.

The Iron Warriors learn a thing or two about weathering.

The last few days have involved some serious weathering, of the acrylic variety. Take a look at the side of this tank, and I'll reveal my recipe:

My basic process for this effect, starts with black primer. A base wetbrushing of Leadbelcher (dark iron metallics), followed by a rust treatment of browns, orange and ruddy brown, in that order. This is applied around details, such as rivets or rust runoffs. I then sponge the Leadbelcher onto the rust spots, to break-up the color with the randomness of a torn sponge (pluck foam has a purpose!). After, I wash the entire area with Agrax Earthshade (some Devlan Mud brown/green/black wash). After the wash dries, I use the Leadbelcher to drybrush anywhere light would catch, such as high ledges and corners. Lastly, I spot wash purple ink into the natural shadows and recesses. This is not my finished treatment, as I have etched brass, acrylic bronze, weathering pigments and verdigris to apply. This is just a summary of my basic weathered metal treatment.

I know that "non-metallic metals" are the rage, but honestly, this treatment is the most realistic "patina" system I have encountered. Sure, it is sloppy and messy, but with a clean, crisp finishing application of details and spot colors, I feel as though such a color treatment communicates a depth and variety of color, akin to a Monet painting, while allowing for a care-free and natural application.

Lastly, I got in a game at Time Warp Comics and Games last week. I played a local Tau player:

I ran a 300+ model Chaos Daemons/Imperial Guard list. Sadly, we rolled kill points, so I had to blob-up my infantry. My opponent was more than capable of meeting my horde of models with a plethora of shots. He tabled me by turn 4 sadly, but I had a blast. I am not really sure that I "play" 40k any more, so much as lose with absurd army lists, but I have fun. I hope my opponents don't mind the "easy win" I provide, but I hope I at least present a unique gaming opportunity, with unique lists and models.

There is a reason that complaints about the rules of 40k, have never bothered me. I think I am in this hobby for different reasons.
The sun rises over the red soil of Vraks.

Polyurethane cures, and three cans of Dulcote set the surface to a matte sheen. Textured laytex paint, combined with masonite, is a fairly inexpensive, yet professional, gaming surface. With all my Vraksian models, I thought it was only appropriate to make a representation of the planet itself. The terrain I already posses is largely painted in cool greys and blues, so I knew a warm colored surface would compliment nicely. After rolling the black textured paint onto the masonite, I airbrushed purples, oranges and greens in a variety of patterns. These colors would compliment any of the primary colors represented in a player's army, while remaining buried beneath the heavy red drybrushed surface of the board. And drybrush, I did: I spent a few hours layering the red drybrush over the buried colors, with each coat and pass bringing the surface of the board closer to the basing treatment of my Vraks collection. The end result, is that the gaming board has a "rippling effect", as your eye just barely reads the colors buried beneath the primary red color. I like it.
A 3'x3' Malifaux table is also in the mix. Natural latex texture mat, bonded to a masonite sheet. I have been airbrushing layers of color onto this board as well, and this pic shows the greens and purples pretty clearly. This board has been a slower process in creation, as I am constantly testing new washes and paints on scraps of latex. Natural latex can be a bit finicky, and I don't want my Malifaux table to disintigrate or decompose mid game, as cool as that could be. The latex is textured to feature winding roots, stones, dry riverbeds and sand. I hope I can do this board justice, without losing my mind painting all that detail...
The Chaos Space Marine portion of the Vraks set is taking shape, and I am enjoying the process. These models are unique, and I really get a kick out of seeing them in my colors and treatments. I remember as a kid, seeing the epic space marine catalogs, and the iconic profile of a squadron of old school land raiders, cresting a hill. I am ashamed to admit the thrill I get each time I review this project.
And lastly, as a bit of a teaser... How is this going to be included in the Vraks project?
As I completed the construction phase on this WH30k Vraksian CSM set, I found myself with a moral quandry. The old RT Chaos Dreadnought was to serve as the core of my Dark Apotheosis Daemon Prince, but the model itself had a fairly... odd sculpt. In addition to short and stubby arms and legs, the model demands resolution to the following quandry: Phallus, or no phallus?

While it was certainly tempting to build this model "anatomically correct", I instead chose to keep it family friendly. Hence the tail. Regardless, on to the conversion!

The photo above displays the torso of my DP. Starting from the bottom: I used the front legs and hooves from a Forgefiend to give the model the height and stance it deserved. Next, I expanded the torso by adding both a nut, and the barrel of a hades autocannon, with brass rod running straight up into the head section. This gave me a sturdy core to build from. The ribcage, is made from two defiler power-scourges chopped down, with some wire to form a raggedy sternum. The shoulders and upper-arms are from Forgefiend weapon mounts, with defiler wrist guards turned into massive shoulder pads. I even added a few defiler "skull masks" to the shoulder pads, to further the Iron Warriors feel. I like how the shoulder pads repeat the profile of the 30k style terminator armor. The forearms are made from Heldrake legs and claws, but you can see them better in some pics lower down...
Here you can see the tail I pinned to the pseudo-phallus. You can also see some of the chaos icons I used to flesh-out the lower back of the model. I know, hourglass figures are all the rage in the chaos warp these days...
While totally impractical, I love this "shield". Made from a re-purposed manticore rocket rack, I trimmed the missile tracks, and eventually (not pictured) wrapped the shield with crisscrossing barbed wire. This pic also gives a decent angle on the smokestack-chimney pieces I added to the model's back. These chimneys have been cut down from their original Maulerfiend size, and placed in such a way to give reference to the "back vents" on the original H.R. Giger design for the Alien. I thought the RT head sculpt was already a nod towards the Alien, so I thought I would be free to continue such direction. The tail is also fairly similar to Giger's original design, if only in profile.

This is a photo detailing the hammer I made for the DP. The shaft of the weapon is made from multiple brass rods, as well as the barrel of a fantasy cannon. I used some of the mooring from an empire steam tank, chaos icons, and plastic card to create the head of the hammer. I have since added (not pictured) tubing and guitar wire running from the head of the hammer, to the DP's power source. I also made sure to score the plastic card head of the hammer with an exacto knife, to display rigorous use.

All in all, this conversion turned out far better than I could have hoped. What could have started as simply a crotch-joke, turned into a pretty unique build. I would like to think that the finished product keeps the WH30k terminator armor profile, while giving a nod to Giger's Alien. With just a touch of "World of Warcraft style" weapon and shield.

I think Perturabo would be proud.

Wish me luck finding weather suitable to prime this army in, what with the 100 degree heat.
